TVM, Malta’s national broadcaster is reporting that George Degiorgio was admitted to Mater Dei Hospital after an altercation with another prisoner. Degiorgio, known as ic-Ciniz, is one of the three persons accused of allegedly killing journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The national broadcaster is reporting that this incident occured at around 11.30am this morning, as an argument erupted between Degiorgio and another, as yet unnamed, prisoner.

It is being reported that the argument escalated and the other prisoner allegedly took aim at Degiorgio and assaulted him using an object he had in his hand, Degiorgio was taken to hospital by police escort where he received treatment for injuries he sustained.

Daphne Anne Caruana Galizia (née Vella; 26 August 1964 – 16 October 2017) was a Maltese journalist, writer, and anti-corruption activist, who reported on political events in Malta

On 16 October 2017, Caruana Galizia was assassinated in a car bomb attack close to her home, attracting widespread local and international reactions. In December 2017, three men among which Degiorgio were arrested in connection with her assassination and they are expected to stand trial and formally be accused of Ms. Caruana Galizia’s alleged murder.

However it is believed that neither Degiorgio nor the other two who allegedly were involved in Daphne Caruana Galizia’s murder were the main mandates for this murder. So far the mastermind remains at large.
